Building Bridges: STEAM Fusion Event Unites Teens and Police for Community Cohesion

Updated: Apr 23

In a vibrant display of community engagement, the STEAM Fusion: Creating Community Cohesion with Cops event, hosted by Unmute Yourself, Inc. and sponsored by United Way and FPL Project Empower, brought together teenagers, law enforcement officers, and local sponsors for an evening dedicated to fostering understanding and respect.

The event, held at a bustling community center, buzzed with excitement as attendees eagerly participated in a range of activities aimed at promoting dialogue and learning. United Way and FPL Project Empower played instrumental roles in making the event possible, providing support for the much of the event costs. Dr. Joanette Brookes-George commenced the event with the focus of challenging attendees to consider the impact of their actions on community cohesion.

The event continued with Insights from Mr. Robens Chery on the "teenage mindset" resonated with attendees, highlighting the challenges teens face and the importance of empathy in their interactions with others. Dr. Joanette Brookes-George facilitated discussions on consent, boundaries, healthy interpersonal relationships, and domestic violence, guiding participants through the progression from understanding these concepts to recognizing and addressing unhealthy behaviors.

Interactive activities, including scenario discussions and a matching game, encouraged participants to think critically and empathetically, fostering a deeper understanding of healthy relationships and conflict resolution. The activity where teens and officers worked together to construct dinner trays symbolized their commitment to building a stronger, more cohesive community.

Nailed IT DIY Studio added a creative touch to the evening with a craft activity, where participants crafted dinner trays emblazoned with the phrase "the difference starts with me." The activity not only provided a tangible reminder of the event but also symbolized the participants' commitment to being agents of positive change in their communities.

City of Lauderhill Police Officers were also in attendance, actively participating in the educational and craft activities. Their presence emphasized the importance of positive interactions between law enforcement and the community, breaking down barriers and fostering trust.

The STEAM Fusion event was a testament to the power of dialogue, understanding, and collaboration in building bridges between communities and law enforcement. Through engaging activities, insightful discussions, and positive interactions, attendees gained valuable insights and forged meaningful connections. As we reflect on this event, let us carry forward the lessons learned and continue to strive for unity and understanding in our communities.

This event showcased the positive impact that can be achieved when communities come together to address important issues. By fostering open dialogue and understanding, events like STEAM Fusion play a crucial role in building stronger, more cohesive communities.
